Hermitage Castle was was built in the late 14th century on or near the site of an earlier, probably wooden structure. It has been in the hands of many owners, both Scottish and English during it's lifetime. Notable owners have included the De Soulis' and the Douglas'. It was visited by Mary Queen of Scots and Sir Walter Scott and was also believed to be the scene of the death of the unfortunate Sir Alexander Ramsay, the Flower of Chivalry.
